The experience at Van Serai has truly been exceptional. Mr Bhuwan ji's hospitality was incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. We were captivated by the breathtaking beauty of nature surrounding us, and the meticulous organization of everything added to the charm. The culinary experience was delightful, with warm and friendly people overseeing the cooking. Overall, it was a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable stay.

We with friends have stayed at Van Serai several times, and always have enjoyed this guest house. A location amidst cedarwood forest and a walking distance from the famous Jageshwar and Dandeswar temples is perfect and beautiful. Rooms are clean and cosy, staff is very friendly and helpful, and food has always been amazing. A dining room is full of ancient pieces and a big Ganesha is set in the middle - that gives a guest house a very special charm. Also, a small yoga and meditation hall is available where you can do your yoga, or just relax at the terrace enjoying the sun coming through the cedar trees.

I wish I could say nice things but sorry, can't. Vastly overrated property with some psuedo-spiritual vibes that maybe is attractive to foreigners who're just happy that they don't have to stay in some awful backpacker dive, so overlook the issues here, especially the terribly 'rustic' rooms and loos. Its so rustic that I might as well stay in some poor villagers homestay and not pay these rates being charged in the middle of nowhere. Proximity to the historic temples is an advantage but still. 'Rustic' floors are terrible (especially in the lower rooms), bathrooms are OK but the low roofing is freaky, most of the furniture is actually a bit dangerous (exposed sharp rusty nails in several, sharp iron knobs and other things sticking out, in or near beds and chairs and doors and corners). There has obviously been an attempt to go ethnic with the decor, which is appreciated, but you're running a hotel for guests, not a handicrafts museum, beyond a point. Furnishings have to be guest friendly first and foremost. The stairs up to the place are steep, so watch out if you have seniors. The food is probably the worst part - awful and overhyped and supposedly 'satvic' but just that it's not completely - they probably put a raw chilli paste in. We woke up at 3:30 AM with a stomach upset after the first dinner. I don't care if you don't put onion or garlic etc but how can satvik food be tartly spicy? I avoided all food here after this despite being someone who mostly eats only bland food. The staff are very good and attentive, that's a major plus. Unfortunately did not have a good experience here.
